Even if the surgical instruments and drapes are sterile at the beginning of surgery, bacteria may still reach the surgical wound and implants from patient's skin, from air and microparticles eventually present in the surgical room.
Once bacteria adhere to an implant, they start immediately producing biofilms, that make them much more resistant to host's immune defence system and to antibiotic activity.
An antibacterial coating would be a simple and effective solution to prevent bacteria colonization of the implanted biomaterials and, finaly, to reduce post-surgical infections.
Antibacterial coatings classification
DAC (Defensive Antibacterial Coating) is
the first fully resorbable coating specifically designed
to prevent bacterial colonization of joint prosthesis and osteosynthesis implants.
